Great Filter, Easy to Use, Need one more Hand
We had a 7-person backpacking group go on a 2-night, 10-mile trek in Arkansas. Day 1 didn’t have any water sources until we finished 6 miles. This pump worked great to refill all our bottles (6+ liters). It went pretty quick and we didn’t have any issues operating it. The water tasted clean and didn’t have any aftertaste (we filled from creeks and the water looked clear and clean to begin with). We chose this one because it specifies 0.01 micron filtering vice some of the others just go down to 0.1 micron. Party members who used it included a 40+ year old man and an 11 year old girl. The outlet hose includes a little clip that’s supposed to keep the hose in the container, but it didn’t hook on to our Nalgenes or Smartwater liter bottles, so it really helped to have one person hold the outlet hose and while a separate person did all the pumping. This also helped quick transitions and fills for all our bottles. We also lost the little clip when one of the more enthusiastic youth swung the hose around to dry it out and it flew off the hose…so now it’s a two-person job regardless.

It just works!
I stumbled across this looking for an alternative to the expensive MSR ceramic and micro filters that I already own. My sons are now needing their own filters for their Scout trips. I saw all the RAVING reviews and figured I couldn’t go too wrong for that price. Boy, was I right! It’s slightly lighter than my ceramic and pumps easier. I’ve only used it on one trip, but it pumped all the water for all three of us, because we all wanted to try it. Our water source was VERY heavy with sediment, but we just let it hang in the collapsible bucket for a bit, to let it all settle. Water had no taste and the filter was easy to use.The only quirk I noted was that the inlet hose seemed a little “too” flexible. On the up, or draw, stroke – the hose collapsed. You really want to wait until it expands again before pushing down and squirting water through the filter. If not, there isn’t much water in the filter and it’s almost a wasted stroke. So you just take a little time to pump slower. Not a big issue, but I wonder a thicker-walled hose would alleviate that, or just cause more issues.Customer service on this was FANTASTIC! I wanted a spare filter to take with, and I’d forgotten to order one initially. With COVID-19, these things are in HIGH demand. But I went to their website, where they have the ability to notify when something is in stock. I signed up, they notified me later when production caught up, and I ordered. The filter got here 2 days later, with no fuss. Great service! I plan on ordering more of these, both for us and for gifts for other Scouts. Sorry MSR, but you’re too expensive!

Great Filter definitely worth a buy
EDIT: This review has been updated to address my concerns about the listed weight. Previously it was stated the filter was 8 oz. However my own measurements were around 12-13 oz. After posting my initial review I see the manufacturer has now updated their website to list the current version at 12.8 oz, so I am giving this filter 5 stars! The filter seems to work fine – I’ve tested it on multiple occasions and it does what it is supposed to do.I do have one gripe, but this hasn’t actually been an issue yet – the pre-filter isn’t really a pre-filter per-se… It is a 0.1 hollow fiber filter (similar to a Sawyer or BeFree) that then goes into a carbon filter and then another finer 0.01 hollow fiber filter. That means if your water isn’t pristine, the hollow fibers of the “pre-filter” might get clogged up with gunk just like a Sawyer would. However, I have not yet experienced this problem yet; I am just basing this on my own experiences with identical 0.1 hollow membrane type filters – they all do this. The solution of course is to place a coffee filter or bandana rubber banded around the pre-filter before you pop it in the stream, lake, stock pond whatever. This is just my opinion, but a real pre-filter would have a removable and user cleanable fine-mesh protecting the hollow-fiber element that goes directly into the water in order to protect clogging. See MSR Trailshot or MSR Guardian for what a mesh pre-filter looks like; the purpose of them is to keep silt and other large debris out of the hollow-fibers. Again, easily remedied with a coffee filter here for a fraction of the price of a Guardian.Anyway, I have put this thing into a couple nasty pools of water – one was chock full of algae. The other one was from a spring that was piped into a nasty rusty bucket full of mud and other debris. I was able to get reasonably clear, decent tasting water both times and this is a huge morale and confidence boost on long distance hikes. I have previously filtered from the same algae ridden source with an MSR Trailshot, and the water was still kind of green and tasted foul. Not so with the survivor filter – from the same source there was still a tinge of green to the water but it tasted totally fine. I say if you are concerned with the lightest weight possible, then this filter may not be for you – it weighs 12.8 oz. But if you are sick and tired of smelly green water from nasty sources that, while technically are safe to drink after filtering with a 2oz Sawyer, and want your filtered water to actually taste, smell and look pretty close to tap water, then I would wholeheartedly recommend this filter.

Small and light, it works fantastic. The filtration level is very reassuring and it really does filter regular water found in nature to safe drinking water. The first few few times rendered a very slight “plastic” taste. One could assume this is from some left over off-gassing of plastics, or perhaps a preservative film that degrades over use to maintain plastic integrity during initial uses during the first portion of the product’s lifetime. Again, this is assumed, not confirmed, but it would make sense. Either way, it works great, as intended, can be trusted.Filling up 1L nalgene took a few minutes. Nice and gentle pumping is needed, this is not a bicycle pump. It would’ve been nicer to have the handle and pumping rod to be made of some type of metal or have metal as part of it for peace of mind. The bag works good for storing it all, and it’s like a type of mesh so it can be put away quickly in the bag and still sort of “breathe” and dry out a little.

I’ve used it on multiple occasions with different grades of poluted water. It does the job really well but I’m a bit sceptical about the durability of my unit, the handle sit rather loose.Edit 1I’ve used my survival filter pro for a very long time now and it has proven that it’s a worthy companion on my hikes.I’ve connected a quick connect from Camelback to my output tube and now at every stop near water I can directly fill up my bladder and stay hydrated.I’ve used it in places where the water quality was questionable but I have to admit this little tool has proven that the filtration is very good and on par if not better then the competition. In places where I really didn’t trust the water I’ve used (after filtering) some drops of hadex or other desinfectant. My doubts about durability eventually faded away and I hope this one will serve me for my next couple of hikes as well!!!

I bought the water filter for an upcoming trip involving a lot of trekking and potential limited water supplies. I am also conscious of cutting down on plastic waste. The filter is very easy to set up, clean (with no chemicals, unless you want to use vinegar), back flush and store away. The triple filter, micron filtration and sheer volume prior to changing parts really sets this filter above it’s competitors. It’s small and lightweight, easy to use and has a pretty decent steady flow rate, without requiring too much effort. It doesn’t require you to lie down flat on wet ground, trying to suck water through a little straw either. The various parts are easy to replace if required and are cheap compared to competitors as well as lasting a lot longer. I’m buying a spare carbon filter as that “only” lasts for 2,000 litres vs. the other filters which seem to last forever! I tried to get hold of some spare hoses as well, but the UK Amazon store were out of stock. I contacted the company directly who could not have been more helpful and accommodating – the customer service was great and something that seems to have gone missing from most retailers these days, so kudos to these guys!Their website also has useful tips on how to use the product and how to stop the parts freezing in sub-zero temperatures (tip: shake the filters out as much as possible and then keep them close to your body in your bag, or in your coat).I did a lot of research on the best water filter beforehand and this won hands down with bloggers and trekkers and has so far lived up to the hype.If I was to be overly critical, the only minor issue I can find is that the hoses give the water a very slight rubbery taste, but I’m sure this will wear off with time and I’m willing to live with it if it gives me clean, fresh water! Also the taste is not as strong as with my camelbak.
