Very Good Oats
When I ordered these, because of the price, I kind of expected a somewhat lower quality offering. But eh, I like oats and the price was right, so… yeah, I decided to get them. But once I did get them, they were quite the pleasant surprise. Easy to cook, excellent texture and taste out of the pan – pretty much everything one could ask from a good bowl of oats.If you like oats, then you can do a lot worse than getting these oats!

Great quality
These are the very best rolled oats ever!! I will definitely order more when needed and/or for the pepper shelf in the basement. The lid is a little difficult to open as I have arthritis in both hands and it takes a knife to pry off.

Proper quick oats, packed for long-term storage
Augason Quick Oats are good oats, steamed and rolled thin, packed in a sturdy air-tight container. These oats will keep a very long time, at least the claimed 30 years. You will need tools to open the container, which along with inadequate oxygen absorbent is the reason these oats got 4 but did not get 5 stars. While the bucket has an o-ring built into the lid and will clearly keep for decades, it is not designed to be opened easily and is a hassle to open.Extended long-term storage of oats requires that the oats be rolled thin and steamed, which creates “quick” oats. This process practically sterilizes the oats and hydrolyzes (chemically bonds water to) the starch in the oats. This creates a more stable chemical configuration, making oxidation the only real threat to the longevity of the oats. You must still cook the oats for a minute prior to eating them because steamed oats partially dehydrolyze as soon as the exposure to steam stops, and humans can only digest fully hydrolyzed starches. The only realistic difference between quick oats and so-called old-fashioned rolled oats is a slight difference in texture due to the oats being rolled a little thinner. Old-fashioned rolled oats do not keep as well, not only because they are not sterilized but also because unhydrolized starch breaks down spontaneously over a period of years, even in the absence of oxygen. Some reviews state that the lack of a mylar inner bag will cause the product to degrade. In my opinion, the bucket with its integrated o-ring seal is adequate and makes a mylar inner bag irrelevant. Other reviewers state the oxygen absorber is inadequate. I did the math and found that the oxygen absorber included is about a quarter of the size needed to absorb the oxygen in 10 gallons of air, so some oxygen will remain to slightly degrade the oats. I’m a little surprised that the manufacturer skimped on the oxygen absorbent. The oats will still keep for at least 30 years but it has to be said the oats would benefit from more oxygen absorbent.Good quick oats, which will keep for the stated 30 years, but the bucket is a real pain and the oxygen absorbent is inadequate.
