Make sure water is had boiling. Adding a little extra water don’t hurt, along with some extra time soaking after the suggested time stir and let sit longer to cool. I ate one pack per meal and still lost weight and only hiked 7.5 miles a day at 10000 ft plus elevations.

Product packaging arrived in perfect condition. Bought at the start of 2025, the product has an expiration of 2054. I made the package per the instructions by adding boiling water, letting it sit for 5 mins, stir and then let sit another 4 minutes. The Chili Mac came out fairly chewy, or very al dente, which is what I love. The consistency is the best part. Flavor is pretty good and tasted fresh enough, but it was a touch too sweet. I like my savory food to be savory, not sweet. Maybe 1/4-1/2 teaspoon too much sugar.This was purchased for a go-bag. The price is a little high, but the shelf life is amazing, so in comparison to other go-bag food, the Chili Mac definitely has its place. Having to add water is a bit of a drawback on the go, especially because the instructions want hot water, but it only requires 1 1/2 cup and MRE heaters are pretty good. I did not try adding room temperature water and doubling the time it sits.

My absolute favorite backpacking meal
This is the best tasting backpacking freeze-dried meal I’ve tried. These are so easy to use, just pour in boiling water and let it sit for a bit. Really hits the spot when you’re out and traveling light. The portion size is great. I always get at least a couple of these when I go out on a multi day trek. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Oh My Gosh! VERY tasty, VERY surprised, EXCEEDED expectations; and one helpful observation
The Mountain House Chili-Mac exceeded our expectations – by a very large margin. I figured it might be wise to try some of this food before stocking up, and chose the Chili-Mac. In reading emergency food reviews, I guess I figured all Emergency Food would be flavored mush. This is NOT the case here. The flavor of the Chili-Mac was excellent, it even has a little spice to it. I figured for sure the noodles and kidney beans would be mushy, but neither was. In fact, both looked and tasted as if they had just been cooked. This dish/pouch does have MEAT, and here is where the helpful observation comes in. We just poured the boiling water in, stirred and ate. The meat was kind of chewy – we did not stir/simmer long enough to let the water get absorbed into the meat to “un-freeze dry” it. A little longer simmer/stir and this dish is outstanding. A+ for Mountain House.

The chili mac with beef is great. It doesn’t taste like a freeze dried meal, if you told me it was fresh homemade hamburger helper I’d believe you. Very hearty and filling. I really appreciate the shelf life on mountain house meals too. I’ve tried some other non-perishable foods, mainly MREs. While I like MREs and they can be fun on account of all the stuff that comes with them, the shelf life is only 5 years. So it’s not like you can buy a bunch and leave them in your basement for emergency food purposes. Mountain house meals last 30 years, and I’d be willing to wager they’d be fine even longer, but the company hasn’t been around long enough to have officially verified that. Anywho, these are great for camping or any emergency food reason. I do feel like they’re a little pricey, but they are very good. I haven’t had a mountain house meal that was bad. I’ve got a few favorites, but they’ve all been tasty and filling.
